Area

Cockermouth is a very pleasant Georgian market town with a wide tree-lined main street.

It is an ideal base as it is so much quieter than Keswick and Ambleside. Cockermouth is indeed the gateway to the northern lakes and mountains. It is also near the coast, the historic city of Carlisle, the Roman Wall, the Scottish Borders and even Gretna Green. The central Lake District is also within easy reach by car and bus.

In Cockermouth itself interesting places to visit include:

  • Wordsworth House
  • Castlegate House Art Gallery
  • The Brewery Museum and Tour
  • The Printing Museum
  • The Auction Market
  • Percy House
  • The Kirkgate Centre
  • The Sheep and Wool Centre

There is a swimming pool and sports centre; fishing for trout and salmon, golf, riding and tennis are among the many sports available. The attractive local park is a short walk away.

And of course there's magnificent walking, climbing, mountain biking, orienteering and canoeing, sailing and windsurfing…..
